Where not to take your Folks.
So it's been 6 months since I've seen my parents, and I had the joy of having them over before they jetted of to Spain, Russia and Iz for 3 weeks. They arrived last Thursday and left Sunday at 3am to catch their flight to Barcelona. So during their stay, while absolutely delighted to see them, I had to think of a London tour to give them. Now my dad has been here about 3 times, 2 of them with me doing whirlwind 1 day tours on our stop overs. So I was thinking of showing them stuff the Big Bus Co doesnt go to. Maybe theres a reason why they dont go there :P
Where else do you take your 65 plus year old folks who enjoy a good life, like designer stuff and well dressed people? Camden! Yes I thought, well they've never seen Camdem, maybe they should!
'I know there are freaks in this world, I dont need to see them!', get us out of here this is ridiculous.
Ok so they didnt like Camden. Camden is like Granville St x30 with punks and goths, yet there are some reasonable people that go there. Camdem is world famous! There are some nice pubs. Its really a world of its own. Needless to say they were not impressed. So where else did I take them after Camden. Oxford Street. After all you must see Oxford St!
'this is nuts, it's like a zoo, I'm getting a headache'.
Ok, so Oxford St wasent really a good choice either. My dad didnt mind, my mom was going ballistic. I mean Oxford St is the most sought out destination for shopping, yet the consumerism ozzes homogeniety as all the stores are just basic joe schmo Gap type. We ran into Bond St by accident which was quiter and of more designer status, so we took a break that day and had a cafe. Much quieter and cooler St than Oxford. I had tainted my parents perspective of London even more.
Funny thing, I was sitting in Greenwich, only a stoens throw away from Blackheath, maybe a 20 minute walk, Sunday after they left and it was so cool that i felt guilty we didnt make it down there. Greenwich after all is GMT, where you can stand with your feet apart and say you straddled 2 time zones. Greenwich is a cleaned up Version of Gastown and culturly much like the Greenwich Village in New York, lots of funky bars, pubs and restaurants. Tres Cool.
So off they've gone with the perception that this city is mass crazed. They did like Blackheath quite a lot. Just goes to show you theres a different cup of tea for every mug.
